From Pour to Power: How Our Candles Are Made

By Emily Rhodes, Product R&D Lead at Modest & Co.

TL;DR

Modest & Co. candles are poured in small batches using coconut apricot wax, cured for 5 days, and designed with top-mid-base scent layering to neutralize cannabis odors. They’re tested using real-world environments and lab-grade analysis.

Why We Don’t Use Soy or Paraffin

We use a coconut apricot wax blend—cleaner burning, better scent throw, and smoother finish. Soy can crack, and paraffin contains petroleum byproducts. We don’t do that here.

The 3-Layer Scent Strategy

  • Top notes: What hits first—usually citrus, herbs, or fresh air
  • Mid notes: Florals or fruits for balance
  • Base notes: Woods, resins, spice—what lingers after the candle is out

This layering is what makes our candles smell natural, not fake or overpowering.

Lab-Tested for Odor Neutralization

We test our formulas using SPME-GC (solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography)—the same method used in environmental labs. Internal tests show up to 85% odor reduction in 15 minutes when used with proper ventilation.

Our Best-Selling Candles

How to Burn Them Right

  • Trim wick to ¼" before every burn
  • Let the wax reach the edges on the first burn to avoid tunneling
  • Burn for no more than 4 hours at a time
  • Keep away from drafts, vents, and A/C

Repurpose the Jar

When you’ve burned through, clean out the jar with hot water and use it to store lighters, pre-rolls, cotton pads, q-tips, or flower stems. Form meets function.
